Autonomous Regions in Spain |
Spain is situated in south Western Europe. It occupies the Iberian Peninsula and is bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and the Cantabrian Sea. It also includes the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands in the Atlantic and the cities of Ceuta and Melilla. Spain covers an area of 504,800 km². It is made up of 17 autonomous regions. They are:

Each region has its own government which shares administrative responsibilities with the central government. The regions have a major say in the area of agriculture in particular. Spain has a population of 40 million with an average population density of 78 inhabitants per km². The current population trend within Spain is to move out towards the coastal areas. The inland regions, with the exception of Madrid and its periphery, are emptying. Almost 5 million people live in the capital Madrid. The Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic are an integral part of the country.
